Making a grand entrance – hallway decorating tips

Februar 24th 2016

As the first thing you and your guests see when they enter, the hallway plays a huge role in setting the tone for the rest of your house. So, whether you have a spacious hallway that is lacking a welcoming feel, or a cramped space that needs opening up, read on for our top hallway decorating ideas

Making a Statement

If ever there was a room in the house in which to create a bit of wow, then the hallway is it.

Of course the kind of statement you want to make will very much depend on the hallway you are dealing with and the rest of your home interior design, but there are a few basic guidelines to follow.

There are plenty of hallway decorating ideas that bring into play some interesting ways of introducing dramatic focal points. This might be in the form of large format flagstones, a bold striped runner, a vintage armchair, striking colour scheme or a pick and mix selection of photographs and artwork displayed as a gallery that follows the line of the staircase.

Good Lighting is Crucial

Lighting design is hugely important in hallway décor. Hallways often suffer from a lack of natural light, so choose your lighting with this in mind.

In terms of ceiling lights, a row of three pendants can give the illusion of a hallway that is longer than it really is — plus they will offer far more light than a single pendant.

Alternatively, a bold pendant light, such as a chandelier, will really add focus to the space — if you have low ceilings, choose one without a chain that fits flush with the ceiling.

In hallways with very low ceilings, where hanging lights would be impractical, take a look at stairlights, uplighters or recessed spots in order to add atmosphere and highlight your statement pieces.

Choosing a Colour Scheme

If your hallway is a fairly compact space, or suffers from a lack of natural light, it will always be best to stick to a predominantly light colour scheme. White, grey, taupe will all work well to create a spacious feel.

Of course this is not to say that all bold tones are out. Painting just one wall in a bolder colour will add a touch of drama and individuality to the space. Using the wall that runs alongside the staircase for your bolder colour is a great idea, as is painting the stairs themselves.

Of course it is not just the walls that can be used to introduce colour — furniture, rugs and accessories can all be used to bring in pops of colour.

In smaller spaces, furniture in a similar or matching colour to the walls works well, whilst spaces that lack a homely feel can be brought to life with the addition of some brightly coloured furniture that contrasts with neutral walls  — check out Zespoke’s range of bespoke console tables which can be customized in stunning colours.

Hallway Furniture

Any good home interior design scheme factors in plenty of storage, and when setting out plans for your hallway décor this is more important than ever.

The hallway is a spot that often becomes a bit of a dumping ground, so ensure the furniture you choose for this space is not only beautiful, but also practical.

There are plenty of slimline furniture options for smaller spaces, such as elegant, leggy console tables. Choose one with shelving or drawers and use the space beneath for baskets or boxes that can hold items such as scarves and hats or shoes.

Small hallways will also benefit from wall storage, such as cabinets with pigeon holes for organizing post and keys and wall hooks for coats and bags.

If you have a little more space, consider a storage bench with a lift up lid, or a shoe storage unit — those limited on space might like to consider stair storage, where drawers are concealed within or underneath the staircase.
