Whether you have plenty of living space, or are the proud owner of a home that is a little more bijoux, clutter is something that most of us struggle to contend with on a day-to-day basis.

Clutter Control

Even the most disorganised person out there can get in control of clutter with a little planning. One of the very first things you should do is to take a stroll around your

home, armed with a notepad and tape measure. Look around each room and identify clutter ‘hot spots’. These are those areas where clutter naturally seems to build up — a coffee table in the living room, the bottom of the stairs in the hallway, your dining table or an area of worktop in the kitchen, perhaps.

Next, think about what would help to prevent this from happening. For example, could your living room benefit from a TV stand with storage space incorporated, your dining room with some wall shelves to deal with paperwork or your hallway from a shoe storage unit? Measure the space available and then think about ways to fit in extra hidden storage.

Invest in a TV Stand with Storage

The living room is definitely one place you don’t want clutter — it should be a calming retreat at the end of a long day.

If you are stuck for floor space it is a good idea to use furniture that is already essential to the room for an extra storage spot. A modern TV stand is the ideal way of squeezing in some extra clutter control methods. Although not all modern TV stands will offer storage, those from Zespoke offer lots of flexibility in their design. All of their modern TV stands come with the option of an additional glass shelf, meaning somewhere to stack all those DVDs, games and remote controls, plus their optional backplate can conceal any unsightly wiring. Their Modern Media Unit and Slot Media Unit are particularly good choices for those on the lookout for a modern TV stand with storage as both feature multiple shelves beneath.

Look Up, Then Down

Those pushed for floor space need to start looking to their ceiling and walls for storage, as opposed to restricting themselves to floor-standing storage units and shelving.

In the kitchen, consider placing open shelves either side or even above a window, or using pan racks suspended from the ceiling.

In the hallway, utilise the walls for hooks and pegs, fit a wall-mounted cupboard or cubby hole unit with separate sections for post, keys and the like, or build storage into your understairs space to take care of an out-of-control shoe collection.

Living rooms and dining rooms alike can be given the same treatment. Shelves fitted above and around doorways provide clutter prevention without taking up floorspace, whilst clever artworks that swing open to reveal cupboards behind provide a nifty solution to clear up clutter fast.

Look down too — the space underneath sofas, beds and staircases all provides a useful spot for hiding clutter away. Use boxes and baskets on castors to make accesses your things when needed a breeze.

Built-in Storage

If you are still in the early stages of your home project, consider creating shelving that is inset into your walls. Stud or partition walls make this a neat and simple solution that won’t impact on your living spaces, providing you with tidy alcoves within the walls themselves.

This is also the time to consider building in window seats with storage beneath or using the bottom two steps of your staircase as pull out drawers.

Handy Extras

Finally, good clutter management is not all about your furniture choices or built-in storage. Sometimes, all it takes is a few well-placed accessories or gadgets to help you take control.

Plenty of wicker baskets, magazine and newspaper racks, box folders, key and bathroom cabinets and even decorative bowls and pen pots should provide a place for just about anything.

Think outside the box — using pin boards, mesh and metal backplates usually seen in garages or retail space to hang tools, utensils and even plants all provides a space for your things without impacting on space. Using Velcro to secure remote controls and games console controls to the inside of a modern TV stand is a great idea that looks good too, as will hidden magnets.
