Why Are Radiator Covers So Boring?

As fittings and fixtures for the home go, radiators are not usually thought of as adding much va va voom in the way of style to the interior décor. More, they are usually designed to blend in and become invisible.

Up until fairly recently, it was a case of either putting up with your boring panel radiators or paying some pretty eye-watering prices for either statement raditators that wow, looking more like sculptural pieces of art than a heat source, or chic traditional cast iron column radiators.

Not much of a choice.

If people were particularly offended by the look of their radiators, or felt that they were completely out-of-keeping with the rest of their interior scheme, they turned to radiator covers to conceal them — the only problem being that most of these radiator covers were barely any better-looking than the radiators they were were hiding.

The cheapest radiator covers (or cabinets as they are sometimes known) are nothing more than a MDF frame with a ‘decorative’ front panel — decorative in the loosest sense of the word. Usually the front panel was simply a lattice design, although sometimes geometric patterns are used. At the same time as adding a bit of interest to what is otherwise just a box over a radiator, these patterns allow heat to escape into the room from the radiator within.

If you are happy to pay a bit more, intricate designs in hardwoods, such as oak and mahogany, are also available, but once again, these tend to stand out like a sore thumb in more modern, fresh interior schemes.

Happily, designers seem to be catching on to the idea that owners of contemporary homes would also like to disguise plain radiators — without compromising on style. What this has meant is that, gradually, the range of radiator covers available is growing, to include some super stylish designs.

Like the sound of concealing your plain old radiators with something eye-catching and bang on trend? Then take a look at the new range of radiator covers from Zespoke. Handcrafted in the UK, the covers are available in a huge range of glossy colours, from monochrome black and white to red, teal and yellow — or if you are one for following current interiors trends, consider their pink and navy designs.
