Using Bold Colours in the Home

November 5th 2014

It can be all too tempting to play it safe when deciding which colours to decorate your home with.

Lots of us are a bit scared of using bold, punchy colours – even if we really like them – in case they date quickly, put off potential buyers or, crucially, leave us wondering what we were thinking the day we chose the colour scheme.

The good news is that you can still have a chic, timeless interior scheme without sacrificing on colour — in fact using colours that reflect your personality is key to feeling at home in your space.

The Walls

If you are keen on the idea of introducing colour to your walls, bear in mind that in the case of bright, bold colours it is a case of less is more — saturating an entire room in sunshine yellow or hot pink is unlikely to be a good idea in the long term, however brave you are feeling on that particular day.

Think about choosing just one or two walls to paint — the wall featuring the fireplace usually works well, as does painting alcoves in your chosen shade.

And if you are still worried about covering the whole wall, use just blocks of bold colour interspersed with white. Another idea would be to break up the wall with a colourful radiator cover.  Finally, any wall that is going to be painted with a bright or dark colour must be in tip top condition — very deep, bold colours can actually highlight surface imperfections. And, if you want to see how a colour is going to work in a particular room, test out paint samples by painting them on a piece of card so that you can move it around the room — the light will dramatically change the way it looks in different areas of the same space.

Introducing Colour With Furniture

Buying furniture that features some of the bold colours that take your fancy is a brilliant way of bringing some of the more vibrant shades you like into the home without overdoing it. A statement sofa or chaise longue in a rich tone is a good example, as is the customisable range of furniture from Zespoke. You get to pick and choose your favourite shades

and where they are used on each item, so you can be as brazen or reserved with your colour choices as you like — their iconic Retro Hoop Coffee Table, for instance, featuring an on trend shade such as Pink Gloss, or a cosy Autumnal colour such as Burgundy Gloss or Olive Green Matt combined with a more neutral tone would be a great way to subtly introduce splashes of colour, as well as giving you an instant focal point in the room.

Making Bold Colours Liveable

Zingy, eye-popping shades are most certainly a great way to breathe some life into your interiors, but without a bit of restraint they can become a little overwhelming. To avoid this, balance them out by mixing in plenty of neutral shades on walls and flooring in the form of whites, creams, greys and taupes. This should tame the overall look a little but will also make the bold splashes of colour you are using stand out all the more.

If you tend to be rather fickle or are still in two minds about using bright colours on your walls, introduce bright colours in strategically placed little blasts instead. A perfect example of how to do this is through decorative accessories such as bowls and vases, or wall art. Scatter cushions, curtains, rugs and other soft furnishings in bold colours work too.
